Byzantines
The Byzantines were the Eastern empire centered at Constantinople. The history of the
Byzantine Empire, in the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries, is little better than a tissue of
usurpation, fanaticism, and perfidy. In 10th century, emperors poisoned, or killed by
dagger of the assassin; parricide and fratricide so common they ceased to excite disgust. The Byzantine church all but lost contact with the Roman pope. During the 10th century the
steady flow of cultural influence spreading westward from Constantinople increased.
