Maximinus Thrax

Sixth persecution. Maximinus Thrax was the Roman emperor from 235 to 238 and the author of the sixth persecution. During this persecution perished Pontianus, bishop of Rome; Anteros, a Grecian, his successor, who gave offence to the government by collecting the acts of the martyrs, Martina, a notable and beautiful virgin, and Hippolitus, a Christian prelate, tied to a wild horse, and dragged until he expired. Christians were slain without a trial, and buried indiscriminately in heaps, sometimes 50 or 60 being cast in a pit together, without the least decency.
