Constantius Chlorus
Constantius governed Britain, Gaul and Spain as Caesar when the persecution broke out. He seems never to have any stomach for it and was half-hearted in the enforcement of the anti-Christian edicts. He was the only Caesar that showed leniency. Under orders to destroy the churches, Constantius refrained from proceeding against individuals.
The father of Constantine was Constantius Chlorus, a good and virtuous father, he was born in Britain. As the new Augustus in far off Britain, he did not persecute the Christians in his prefecture of Gaul, but suspended all proceedings against the Christians and began to show them many signs of favor. His religion tended toward pagan monotheism in the form of the Unconquerable Sun.
