Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. The year 1492 is the critical date in the whole history of Spain. It was the year that Ferdinand and Isabella seized the last fragment of Moslem Spain and Columbus laid the first stones of the great Spanish Empire in the New World. But it was also the year when extensive religious persecution began.

The great explorations were part of the Renaissance, part of a general stirring of European nations, of an era of adventure and the energetic pursuit of new things. Columbus' aim, as he expressly declared, was to discover India and to realize the old crusading dream of finally overcoming Islam by a huge pincer movement launched simultaneously from East and West.
