Covenant
The word testamentum is often used in Latin to express the Hebrew word which signifies covenant. The title, Old and New Testaments, are used to denote the old and new covenants. When one of the parties is infinitely superior to the other as in a covenant between God and Man, there God's covenant assumes the nature of a promise. God made covenants to the Hebrews and Christians, Noah, Abraham, Israel, David and the Old and New Testaments.
A covenant is properly an agreement between two parties. The old and new covenants are the agreement that God has made with man. According to the Bible, when God saved the tribes of Israel out of the land of Egypt and created Israel as a nation, He entered into a covenant with them by which He promised to be their God if they would promise to trust in Him and do His will.
